Sticking to That Pregnancy Diet May Be a Challenge
Upon learning that they are pregnant, most women become conscientious about taking care of themselves and the new life inside of them.
One of the most important things a mother-to-be can do for her unborn child is eat healthy. After all, as the saying goes, she is eating for two. By taking in the proper nutrients in sufficient amounts, a mother is enhancing her chances of delivering a healthy child. A pregnancy diet should include healthy sources of protein, carbohydrates, fat and fluids. This will provide mom and baby with the nutrients they need to retain strength and energy and to grow.
One peculiar occurrence that takes place in pregnancy is cravings. You have probably heard stories about women wanting to eat some strange combinations of foods or just wanting something that was not an item on their diet previously.
There are many hypotheses regarding these cravings, but no concrete evidence to explain what is going on in a woman’s body to make her want peanut butter and pickles or whatever the food of choice.
One popular explanation is that the yearnings are the body’s way of telling a woman that she needs the nutrients that the desired food will provide. Again, there is no scientific evidence to back up this belief.
Rather than hungering for a particular food, some women have aversions to certain foods. This may be a protective measure generated by the body. You could see why an aversion to alcohol or cigarettes while pregnant would be a good survival measure. This possible explanation also has no scientific backing.
Whatever the origin, these longings can challenge a healthy eating routine if the craved foods are not healthy. However, many times cravings involve foods such as dairy products, which are a great source of protein, calcium and other nutrients and a great addition to any pregnancy diet.
